Economics of Staying In School
by Richard Moffat - Friday, 22 January 2010, 02:15 PM

An Opportunity for all Grade 10 Students, February 16, 2010

Economics of Staying in School (ESIS) has a specific purpose, to encourage students to consider and reflect on the advantages of remaining in school until they have acquired the knowledge, attitudes and skills to undertake the longer-term goal of a successful career.

Students learn about the relationship between education and personal goals by:

  • Defining success in personal terms
  • Understanding the cost of living
  • Exploring the types of careers that match their goals and lifestyle expectations
  • Describing factors that affect a person’s chance for success in the workplace
  • Relating educational attainment to earning potential
  • Relating earning potential to future aspirations
  • Summarizing their current skills & talents
  • Practicing the application process for jobs
  • Listing the benefits & opportunities available to those who complete post-secondary education
  • Describing opportunity trade-offs involved in leaving school
  • Developing job search skills

In short, this experience highlights the practical reasons for staying in school!

Students will be transported by school bus to TRU for the entire day. Any parent/guardian that does not wish to have his/her son or daughter attend should watch for the withdrawal slip being sent home with the student. Students choosing not to participate will be expected to attend regular classes.

Students Fundraising for Haiti
by Richard Moffat - Wednesday, 20 January 2010, 03:10 PM

NorKam is holding a coin drive for Haiti relief. Funds raised will be forwarded to Free the Children's Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. The proceeds of this fund will be used to purchase medical supplies, provide emergency relief in cooperation with Partners in Health, and educational projects. Coin collection containers can be found in your C block class, in the office, or at Norky's.

Craig Kielburger is posting regular tweets as he leads Free the Children initiatives down in Haiti. You can read his tweets in a block posted to the right column of this home page.

Thanks for any assistance you are able to provide.
